The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians

John N. Low. The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians and the City of Chicago. East Lansing, MI; Michigan State University Press (2016).

This is a very unusual and valuable book for those interested in Chicago history or the urban Native American experience. The author is a scholar who also is a member of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. The book includes well-researched essays about the ways that generations of Pokagon Potawatomi have related to Chicago, striving not to be assimilated or forgotten while also participating in the wider society of their own time and place.

In his Author! Author! blog series, Museum president Gary T. Johnson highlights works that draw on our collection.
