Connecting youth with Chicago-area museums

Park Voyagers is a free, innovative program that connects Chicago youth (ages 8 to 10) with experiential, educational enrichment from Chicago-area museums in informal settings. Museum educators travel to Chicago Park District field houses to provide kids with hands-on activities and projects. Held each spring and fall, the six-week program includes neighborhood-based after-school and evening workshops for kids and their families, along with a facilitated museum visit. To find out if we will be visiting a park near you, visit the Park Voyagers website.

The Chicago History Museum’s Park Voyagers curriculum invites kids to explore the city’s iconic flag. Participants discover the history behind the symbols with the help of the Museum’s primary resources, teaching collection artifacts, and photographs.

Part 1: Fur Trade Game
Uncover the significance of the first star, Fort Dearborn, and the two blue stripes, the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.

Part 2: Don’t Blame the Cow! and the Bucket Brigade
Trace the events of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 to reveal the importance of the second star.

Part 3: World’s Fair Bingo, Design a World’s Fair Activity, and Make a Souvenir
Explore the third and fourth stars, which represent Chicago’s two world’s fairs—the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 and the A Century of Progress of 1933–34.

Park Voyagers is presented by Museums in the Park and the Chicago Park District.
