Virtual Members’ Open House, Day 2

Thursday, May 27

The CHM Members’ Open House provides members and Historical Alliance with exclusive access to Museum collections and staff. It is a great opportunity to hear about all of the Museum’s upcoming projects, exhibitions, and programs. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to go behind the scenes!

This event is FREE for CHM members and Historical Alliance. You may attend all or some of the sessions. If you register for Thursday, you will receive links to access all of the day’s sessions (except the CHM Trivia Extravaganza). These links will arrive via email the week of the event. The link to participate in the CHM Trivia Extravaganza will be sent to registrants separately.

Questions? Members should contact Justina Doyle, member relations manager, at [email protected], and Historical Alliance should contact Lauren Wissbaum, individual giving and annual fund manager, at [email protected].

Thursday’s Schedule

3:00 p.m. – Virtual Tour of the Stacks

Don’t miss this opportunity to go behind the scenes in one of our most popular collections spaces! We will send out a new, pre-recorded video tour of the stacks to highlight ongoing activity to accommodate new acquisitions and look at how we house various types of materials. Technical services librarian Elizabeth McKinley will be on hand to answer questions.

3:30 p.m. – Community Art on the Jaffee History Trail

The Chicago History Museum’s Richard M. and Shirley H. Jaffee History Trail is a major component of our current multifaceted park beautification project. Hear from chief strategic initiatives officer Kris Nesbitt and director of exhibitions Tamara Biggs about the community-designed weathervanes that will be featured on the new Jaffee History Trail.

4:00 p.m. – Where in Chicago?

Museum educators Heidi Moisan and Megan Clark emcee this fun and fast-paced quiz session that will test your knowledge of Chicago’s famous landmarks from downtown to neighborhoods across the city. Perfect for families who enjoy trivia! Images from CHM’s collection will illustrate our journey through the city. This session is geared for adults with kids ages 8–12.

5:00 p.m. – Curious Neighborhoods

From Rogers Park to Hegewisch and everywhere in between, CHM chief historian Peter T. Alter will take on your most burning questions about Chicago’s many neighborhoods. All members and Historical Alliance are invited to submit questions here by Monday, April 26.

6:00 p.m. – What’s New in the Research Center?

What have Research Center staff been up to the past year? Find out as cataloging and metadata librarian Gretchen Neidhardt, technical services librarian Elizabeth McKinley, and other staff talk about their recent projects. Find out about new items (and what’s currently off-site), how to book appointments, the new CONTENTdm interface in CARLI, a new ARCHIE searching interface, and critical cataloging efforts, including new research guides. Q&A session to follow.

7:00 p.m. – New Programming Initiatives

Join public and community engagement manager Erica Griffin as she talks about CHM’s DEI-informed public programming model, which expands narratives of iconic Chicago stories with equally impactful but lesser-known narratives about the city. Get a first look at CHM’s future-facing teen project, VOIDS, which amplifies city spaces of African American women’s activism during the US suffrage movement. The VOIDS project supports CHM’s online experience, Democracy Limited: Chicago Women and the Vote.

7:00 p.m. CHM Trivia Extravaganza

Think you know Chicago’s history? Test your knowledge with CHM staff as they quiz you with images from our visual materials collection. You must register for this event separately.

Responses will be scored during the event, and we will announce the winner at the end. In the event of a tie, all top scoring teams will be declared winners. This competition is limited to 30 teams maximum. Members can register on their own or with a team, but only one person from the team should register. Registration ends on Sunday, May 23. The winning team can select a print of their choice from our Photo Store. CHM will be in touch with the winner on how to claim their prize.
