100th Anniversary of the Chicago Flag
Waving atop building entrances, emblazoned on t-shirts, coffee mugs, water bottles and bumper stickers, and more tattoos than we can count, there is nary a day that goes by without seeing the iconic red, white, and blue of the Chicago flag. But how many of us really know the meanings behind its stars and stripes?
Join us to toast the 100th anniversary of this great Chicago symbol and discover how the flag got its stripes. Hear one of our expert historians tell the story of its origins and see rare artifacts, including a 1947 Chicago flag carried on the first round-the-world commercial passenger flight of the Pan American Clipper, images of early versions of the flag, and clippings from the flag designer Wallace Rice’s notebook. Enjoy the sounds of Chicago artists spun by Groove is in the Heart.
