Chicago History on Stage: A Wonder in My Soul
In celebration of African American History Month, delve into Victory Gardens Theater’s latest production, A Wonder in My Soul, directed by Chay Yew and written by Marcus Gardley. The play focuses on Bell and Birdie’s relationship with their South Side neighborhood as they grapple with the decision to relocate under pressures of crime and gentrification. Incorporating music, poetry, and dance, A Wonder in My Soul looks at one community’s evolution via two best friends and their lifelong relationship.
View a scene from the production and hear a panel discussion, moderated by Laura Alcalá Baker, Victory Garden Theater’s artistic programs manager. Joy L. Bivins, the Museum’s director of curatorial affairs, joins the conversation to provide historical context, while Chay Yew, Victory Garden Theater’s artistic director, will discuss the development of the play.
