Celebrating Louis Sullivan's 150th Anniversary

In 2006, the Chicago History Museum led a six-week series of public programs to mark the 150th anniversary of Louis Sullivan's birth. The culminating event was the Louis Sullivan at 150 International Symposium, held at the Museum. Chicago History Museum & Partners Announce the Citywide Celebration

September 3 - October 15, 2006

CHICAGO (August 29, 2006) In honor of Louis Sullivan turning 150 years old this September, the Chicago History Museum partnering with architectural, cultural, and educational institutions in Chicago, presents a six-week celebration dedicated to honoring and examining the life and work of one of Chicago's and America's most important but often overlooked architects from September 3 through October 15, 2006.

The citywide celebration, titled "Louis Sullivan at 150" consists of nearly two dozen public programs over the six-week timeframe. The celebration officially kicks off with a special ceremony and birthday cake cutting on Thursday, September 7 at the Charnley-Persky House, 1365 North Astor Street, from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. This building is an 1891-92 Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright building and the headquarters of the Society of Architectural Historians. The program includes the following speakers: Pauline Saliga, Executive Director of the Society of Architectural Historians; John Eifler, Principal, Eifler & Associates Architects; T. Gunny Harboe, Principal, Harboe Architects, pc; and John Russick, Curator, Chicago History Museum and Chair of the Louis Sullivan 150th Committee. In addition to the speakers, presentations include mold making of Sullivan ornaments led by the International Masonry Institute, a display of Sullivan artifacts, and computer stations demonstrating the "Louis Sullivan at 150" web site.
