Founded in 1856 by Chicago's leading entrepreneurs,
the Chicago Historical Society (CHS) is Chicago's first cultural institution
and functions as the communal memory of the city. This memory is encoded in a
collection of more than 20 million objects, images and documents that comprise
one of the nation's most unique and important resources for understanding the
evolution of America into an urban society and nation. Functioning as both a museum
and research center, CHS also offers a broad variety of engaging educational programs
for the public and school children, including traveling exhibitions; dance, music and
other performing arts; lectures; symposia; classes; field trips, and tours.
