The 1868 National Union Republican Convention The 1868 Republican Convention session. (CHS) The post-Civil War Republican Convention of 1868 nominated a man considered to be a hero: Ulysses S. Grant, Lincoln's trusted general in the Union Army. Both Northern and Southern states and territories were allowed delegates and all of the 650 delegates present voted in favor of Grant's nomination. The convention unanimously adopted 12 "Declarations of Principle" and two additional proposals by Gen. Carl Schurz. These policies created a platform aimed at: continuing reconstruction of the South; protection of loyal Southerners, oppressed people, and immigrants; plans to create economic stability in the South; and a reassertion of the principles laid down in the Declaration of Independence. Grant won the general election and went on to serve two terms as president.
