The Burnt District
The North Division home that Officer Bellinger saved from destruction. According to legend, later refuted by his widow, the policeman used his store of cider to wet down the house when the water ran out. With the fire headed his way, Bellinger, assisted by his brother-in-law, removed all the leaves around his home and tore up the nearby wooden sidewalk and fence and then snuffed any sparks as soon as they landed.
