Map Showing the Burnt District in Chicago
Map Showing the Burnt District in Chicago, 1871 (3rd Edition, Published by the R.P. Studley Company, St. Louis) The Burnt District
This is the third of at least four such editions of this map published by the R.P. Studley Company, with proceeds going to the victims of the fire. The Studley map is larger and more colorful than most of the many similar maps that appeared with accounts of the fire. The O'Leary cottage is located at the upper left-hand point, and one can clearly see how the fire moved north and east from there. (Note that "North" is to the right on this map.) Also apparent is that the fire jumped both the south and main branches of the Chicago River, and that the North Division suffered the most extensive damage.
