The social highlight of the centennial was this gala dinner for 1,400 at the Conrad Hilton
Hotel, the menu and program for which can be viewed through the link below the program
cover pictured above. The choice and names of the dishes of the menu (note the main
course) and the selection of music for the program indicate that the tone of this anniversary
was not quite as serious as that of some others. United Charities, the organization
that had long before absorbed the Relief and Aid Society, held a separate dinner, also at the Hilton, a week
before as "a tribute to the individuals, business firms, institutions and civic, welfare and
cultural forces that have played a leading part in the city's spectacular history."
By 1996, United Charities had changed its name to Metropolitan Family Services, and it
held a commemorative FireBall on Saturday evening, October 5.
